On 23 October 2019, the third strategy meeting of the "RETHINK IT" think tank took place in Berlin. It is part of a series of think tanks that started operations in 2018 on the initiative of the 2b AHEAD ThinkTank Partner Advisory Board. This session, focusing on the future of quantum computers, is also linked to the Quantum Summit, which was part of the 16th Future Congress of 2b AHEAD in 2017.
First, Rüdiger Pfeiffer, Researcher at 2b AHEAD, gave an overview and introduction to the current state of the study on the future of quantum computers.
Lior Zaks, Director Innovation & DLT at 2b AHEAD, spoke about post-quantum distributed ledger technologies. Which are threat scenarios that quantum computers realize for current distributed ledger technologies such as Bitcoin and which strategies are there used to counter them?
Dr. Samuel Mugel, Co-Founder of Multiverse Computing, gave an insight into the already possible applications of quantum computers in the financial sector. For example, quantum computing can already find new solutions in portfolio optimization or predict the collapse of financial systems.
Witold Kowalczyk, Director, European Business Development at Zapata Computing, spoke about how Zapata bridges the gap between currently available quantum computers and actual industry problems. In particular, he discussed the industries in which there are creating potentials through quantum computing through quantum algorithms that are already available today.
Prof. Winfried Hensinger, Professor of Quantum Technologies at the University of Sussex, gave a detailed overview of all currently known approaches to building quantum computers. In particular, he presented his approach with the help of ion traps, which have an enormous potential to realize quantum computers with millions or billions of qubits.
In the following discussion, the opportunities and challenges of quantum computers were again highlighted and it was discussed what companies can already do today to benefit from the use of quantum computers.
